BAR ATTENDANT

The Bar Attendant Skills Programme is a CATHSSETA accredited skills programme designed to equip learners with the practical and customer service skills required to operate effectively in licensed hospitality environments. The programme covers core bar operations including preparing service areas, cleaning and storing glassware, serving bottled wines and cocktails, maintaining beverage equipment, cellars, kegs and gas cylinders, and providing efficient drinks service.

In addition, learners are trained in customer service, communication, health and hygiene, workplace safety, basic calculations, payment processing, and maintaining professional working relationships. The programme integrates theory and workplace-based learning to ensure learners are competent, service-oriented, and industry-ready for employment as bar attendants in hotels, restaurants, lodges, pubs, and other hospitality establishments.

COURSE CONTENT

Theory:   

  • Layout, services & facilities of the organisation.
  • Health, hygiene, safety & security.
  • Basic calculations.
  • Different payment methods.
  • Telephone etiquette.
  • Different glassware & equipment.
  • Liquor laws.
  • Different wines, spirits, liqueurs and cocktails.

Practical:

  • Maintain health, hygiene & professional appearance.
  • Maintain safe & secure working environment.
  • Operate a payment point & process payments.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with other members of staff.
  • Communicate verbally.
  • Process incoming and outgoing telephone calls.
  • Provide customer service.
  • Clean & store glassware.
  • Clean & restock drinks machine / equipment.
  • Prepare & clear areas for drink service.
  • Serve bottled wines.
  • Prepare & serve cocktails
  • Maintain kegs & gas cylinders for use.
  • Maintain cellars / beverage store room.
  • Provide a drinks service for licensed premises.

Duration: 55 Days (Including theory and practical).

Certification: Drum Beat Academy and CATHSSETA Certificate.

Entrance Requirements:

  • Learners should have a basic comprehension of English.
  • Basic reading, writing and mathematical skills are required.

Assessment:

  • Practical assessment on serving customers in the bar.
  • Questionnaire on theory.
  • Assignment on workplace implementation.
