ONLINE CULTURE GUIDE (PROVINCIAL) QUALIFICATION

Drum Beat Academy offers a CATHSSETA accredited Culture Tourist Guide qualification, designed for individuals who are passionate about sharing South Africa’s rich heritage and cultural diversity with visitors from around the world.

A Culture Guide conducts in-depth tours with a strong focus on South Africa’s historical and cultural wealth, offering informative and engaging experiences across various provinces. These guides are knowledgeable about key cultural landmarks, regional histories, and the unique traditions that define each area.

This qualification allows learners to operate as registered tourist guides within specific provinces, with the opportunity to expand their scope to additional provinces or progress towards becoming a National Guide. The flexibility of this career path makes it ideal for those who wish to travel, explore, and connect with people while building a professional tourist guiding career.

Theory:

Practical:

Learners will develop the skills to confidently conduct guided cultural tours, delivering informative, engaging, and culturally sensitive experiences to a wide range of audiences. The programme also focuses on the importance of delivering exceptional customer service, ensuring guests feel welcomed, informed, and cared for throughout the tour. Additionally, learners will be equipped to identify and effectively handle challenges or unexpected situations, demonstrating problem-solving abilities and maintaining professionalism under pressure—essential qualities for any successful tourist guide.

Entry Requirements:

To enrol in this qualification, learners must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • A National Senior Certificate (Matric/Grade 12) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Proficiency in at least two South African languages.
  • Be a South African citizen.
  • Possess good reading, writing, and numeracy skills (English).

 

Course Duration & Format:

  • This is a structured 8-month online learning programme, supported by scheduled practical components and assessments.
  • Theoretical Component: Completed online via Google Classroom.
  • Practical Component: A compulsory 2-day in-person practical weekend, held in Pretoria or Johannesburg on scheduled dates.

 

Assessment Overview:

Learners will be assessed through a combination of practical and theoretical activities, including:

  • Practical Assessment: "Conduct a Guided Experience" (via video call or in-person in Pretoria).
  • Theoretical Assessment: Written exams to be completed (via Google Classroom or in-person in Pretoria).
  • Portfolio of Evidence (theory assessments): Includes completed workbooks, assignments, and practical documentation.

 

Certification:

Upon successful completion, learners will receive a certificate from CATHSSETA, as well as a Drum Beat Academy Certificate and Acknowledgement of Result.

 

How the Online Course Works:

The course is delivered via Google Classroom, a user-friendly learning platform where all materials, assignments, and feedback are managed.

 

What you’ll need:

  • A computer or laptop.
  • Reliable internet connection and sufficient data.
  • A Google account (preferably with a Gmail address).
  • Access to Microsoft Word and a PDF reader.
  • Optional: Printer, scanner, and a recording device (e.g. smartphone).

 

Course Structure:

This is a 8-month structured course (self directed learning) – you are not required to attend live online classes at specific times. However, there are clear submission deadlines to guide your progress and ensure timely completion of each module.

Course content is released in stages. You’ll need to complete one module (including the workbook, assignments, and assessments) before unlocking the next. Continuous feedback, support, and mentoring are available during office hours, with additional video call sessions scheduled as needed to address questions or provide clarification.

Extensions may be granted in cases of extenuating circumstances.
